The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
