The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team might be designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible with a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can anticipate more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
