Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the option to question certain calls from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
